| Summary: |
This project was conceived as a result of the Iron Curtain that separated many of the former USSR countries from the rest of the developed and developing world. Many of these countries, as a result of their political ties, lack investment and are separated from the EU, resulting in an underdeveloped rural economy that had not changed for hundreds of years. Agricultural output had dwindled, and production, horticulture are farming methods were still embedded from the previous century. The main objective of the Iron Curtain project was to establish a new development strategy for the development of rural areas and to create a programme that would result in considerable modernization, leading to increased profitability and a resurgence in the rural economy. The project partners developed a methodology based on their extensive combined experience that resulted in a range of tools and procedures for integrated resource evaluation, analysis and management, all of which were built around the governing principle of sustainable development.
