The Balaton Project aimed to develop an action programme based on an innovative and integrated Decision Support System to promote sustainable tourism, regional development and management in in the Lake Balaton region. By developing an environmental and socio-economic monitoring system which consists of online traffic, water quality and other instruments, an outline was created for rehabilitating the region and founding sustainable development. GIS technologies were incorporated to further complement and improve the project.

The aim of the Rhizospheric Wetland project was to recultivate the solid communal landfill of waste located in Magosliget, Hungary. A highly innovative technology using biological reed bed type rhizospheric sewage water cleaning and re-utilising plant was developed to benefit four neighboring villages. New job opportunities and alternative income sources were created by the project.

There is a need for solutions that facilitate decision-making, understanding of environmental management, and evaluation of environmental performance. The business case for improved environmental performance in SMEs can be demonstrated when an industry-specific, easy, and cost-efficient solution is provided. Our case study concerned the improvement of environmental performance of small and medium sized transportation companies. The aim was to develop a web-based tool that enables the user to calculate the environmental impact of her/his activities. There is also an opportunity to simulate a change and the corresponding environmental performance improvements and costs. The tool met the requirements of EMAS and ISO 14001, including a training application.

This project aims to identify existing EO-data providers and users in the wider Balkan region, to determine their status, potentials and needs, and to coordinate EO players by establishing proper interfaces and networking between them. A broad analysis of gaps and complementarities of EO activities within the region will be performed, with the emphasis on user needs in the specific context of the Balkan region.

The Szigetkoz project developed an innovative Decision Support Tool for the sustainable water and land use management planning and flow supplementation of the Hungarian-Slovakian Trans-boundary Danube Wetland Area.

The Tisza River Project was an RTD project proposal under the EC’s 5th Framework Programme. The overall objective was to assist in the protection of water resources and ecological values in the Tisza River Basin through integrated catchment management tools, as well as sustainable resource use. Additionally, this project was a part of the cluster of European projects under a scheme called CATCHMOD, which combined and harmonized similar catchment modelling practices on a European level.

The TRAINASA International Research Training Programme worked on strengthening the research potential of young natural scientists from the Albanian Academy of Sciences. To overcome significant barriers to participating in European research, factors identified from within the Academy and at the national level were noted and three main capacity building activities undertaken to remedy this. Training opportunities and events were arranged to engage young researchers into ongoing EU projects and better familiarize them with the structure of the programme.

RESBOAT was a unique project held aboard a boat travelling on the Danube to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable energy use, specifically focusing upon the Central-Eastern and Southern European regions. The main objective was to promote the results of projects concerned with renewable energy sources. Projects from FP7, FP6, FP5, IEE, ALTERNER II, SAVE II, and national programmes were advertised, along with a strong component of networking and engagement between international actors.

The SME-ENVIRONMENT project was established to offer an innovative and flexible training tool for environmental SMEs from the New Member States and Candidate Countries. The objective was to encourage and assist their participation in the 6th and 7th framework programmes through web-based services after assessing their specific needs.

AquaStress was an EU-funded, integrated project under FP6. The aim was to mitigate water stress issues by delivering interdisciplinary methodologies enabling actors at different levels and stages of the planning process to get involved. Covering the technological, management, policy, socio-economic, and environmental domains, AquaStress presented new integrated water management tools and decision-making practices.

The Enefmun project, fully titled “Training of Local Authorities Experts on the Identification, Development and Implementation of Energy Efficiency Projects in Municipalities,” was a SAVE project aimed at accelerating energy efficiency market formation activities. The goal was to implement measures for the Rational Use of Energy (RUE) and Energy Efficiency in various municipalities, mainly in NAS as well as several participating EU Member States, through the relevant training of municipal energy managers. The focus of a technical training was upon municipal lighting, public buildings, and district cooling/heating systems; another training covered the demand-side management and least-cost planning for developing business plans in energy efficient projects. Enefum also established a network of selected municipalities linked with national and/or regional energy centers as partners for transferring value added information about policy reforms, financing and energy management.

The aim of the Aurora project was to assist Hungarian environmental authorities with monitoring and evaluating the standard of air quality in Budapest and compare it with standard EC legislation, as well as prospective legislation at the time. A series of formulae and modelling tools were developed that sought to contribute to an effective and pragmatic policy to improve the health of the environment in the capital city.

The ASTECH project was designed to support industrial manufacturers and engineering companies of heating and cooling systems in their development by introducing more renewable energy sources into their technology. The goal was to setup technology resource centres in Europe as a bridge connecting technology providers with technology users.

The project, “Energy 4 Cohesion,” prepared a knowledge base for the implementation of Renewable Energy (RE) and Energy Efficiency (EE) actions in less developed rural regions of Europe. The project articulated which RE actions are relevant for receiving financial support with Structural and Cohesion Funds during the 2007-2013 period. The project demonstrated best practice in eight selected target regions through the design of comprehensive Master Plans. The aim was to facilitate the implementation of RE actions in the selected regions by identifying the best funding mechanisms and suitable cooperation schemes.

The Biofuel Marketplace project was created in order to provide an interactive web-based forum where Europe’s biofuel stakeholders can promote their technologies, exchange ideas, sell and buy biofuel products, disseminate results of national, international and European research activities and raise awareness to the public and the professional community. The on-line supply and demand information system is expected to encourage the further exploitation of the EU biofuels potential and also provide help to reduce European dependency on conventional fuels.

The ECO-PCCM project introduced a new class of eco-friendly and cost-effective polymer composite construction material. The project addresses the combination of European and Balkan scientific and engineering expertise in natural fibre composites, innovative house-component design and construction of low cost – low energy building composites and waste-recycling processes to develop a new generation of housing systems that are environmentally friendly, economically viable and socially desirable. For the development and production of eco-friendly composite products, computer aided material design approach will be applied.

The Energy Forest study focused on the prospects of developing biomass on unproductive agricultural lands, utilizing historical data-series analysis. A land classification methodology was constructed; then the most appropriate types of biomass dependent upon each land category were explained. The next step included an assessment of the socio-economic and environmental effects of such energy forest developments. Finally, an outline of theoretical decision support system for assisting with rational decision making and land management was prepared.

REPROMO, the Renewable Energy Promotional Campaign for the Realisation of Transnational RES Projects, sought to accelerate renewable energy sources market penetration in Central and Eastern Europe by forging alliances between manufacturers, financial institutes and project developers around concrete RE actions. Further, the REPROMO initiated a Market Place to establish a network for cooperation.

The overall objective of the INTUSER (Information Network on the Technology of Utilisation and Sustainability of Energy Resources) project was to raise public awareness of the benefits and drawbacks of utilising various energy resources. A web-based platform was developed to stimulate intensive and moderated discussions in a well-disseminated \"Arena\".

The Iron Curtain project developed a methodology for encouraging the standardization of tools and procedures for integrated resource evaluation. Tested and scaled in several case studies across several European countries, the model was designed to be transferable and useful to other states from the former Iron Curtain region. The divergent regional policies had led to great discrepancies between neighboring states and the project aimed to address these matters.

The project, Geothermal Power, was a feasibility study conducted on installing geothermal small-scale power plants in Hungary. Providing a model for extended application throughout the New Member States and EU-15, the wider objectives were to contribute to sustainable development, GHG targets, and compliance with Directive 2001/77/EC on renewable energy sources.

The overall objective of this project was to raise public awareness and understanding for ore mining technologies, and introduce the challenges environmental scientists encounter when facing mining-related environmental issues in the European Union and New Member States.

The AquaREC project introduced integrated concepts for the reuse of upgraded wastewater. The general objective was to provide knowledge for a rational wastewater strategy as a major component of sustainable water management practices. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the project defined assessment criteria about the appropriateness of wastewater reuse concepts in Europe.

The Building Accessible Services project addressed the accessibility of the built environment for disabled people, especially highlighting the need to in workplaces. The goal of the project was to raise public awareness, influence decision makers, provide training on new methodologies of assessment, and to provide basic knowledge to enhance the education of professionals through the publication of the Orange Book, a collection of case studies by the project partners.

The project's general objective is to directly support SME participation in FP6 by means of new, innovative and highly cost-efficient supporting tools. The project will target SMEs from all ACCs focusing on all sectors; although IT, biotechnology, energy and environmental sectors may be preferentially treated together with SMEs lead by women managers. In order to promote their participation in FP6, innovative e-consultancy services will be established that will directly assist SMEs in FP6 project development and proposal writing (i.e. financial, project management, legal and IPR issues).

PELLETS@LAS is an Intelligent Energy Europe project that promotes transparency on the European fuel pellets market. To facilitate pellet trade and remove market barriers, the project developed a public database to counter information gaps and also local supply bottlenecks, production surpluses, and quality assurances. The detailed market data should offer actors involved an opportunity to understand the market and further advance it.

The Concerto AL Piano project under the EU’s FP6 can be regarded as an urban pilot project at the neighbourhood level. Activities include the development of an eco-village, eco-refurbishments, and a variety of other constructions and related measures. Multiple, energy efficient techniques and innovative instruments were utilized in the project.

The overall objective of the ClimateWater project is to study European and international adaptation measures and strategies related to climate change impacts and how these are taken into account in water policies. The project is formulating a coherent framework on adaptation strategies of climate change impacts on water resources, water cycling and water uses of the society and nature with special regard to those that water policy has to take into account when considering climate change impacts.

ICT-VentureGate is an FP7 project that aims to facilitate financing of attractive ICT SMEs, which have participated in the Sixth and/or Seventh Framework Programmes and are seeking sources of venture capital to commercialise the results of their R&D activities It is working on the creation of innovative solutions to enable efficient interactions between SMEs in the Framework’s ICT projects and innovation investors, such as business angels and venture capital investors.
These activities are coordinated and synergistic with the complementary activities of the ICT-Finance MarketPlace cluster.

FLEAT, Fleet Environmental Action and Assessment, is a project seeking to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions of captive fleets by implementing integrated measures on energy efficient vehicles, the energy efficient use of vehicles and fleets. Building knowledge on the instruments, measures, and tools to promote energy efficiency will be demonstrated through several pilot actions.

The FP7 project, CEUBIOM, focuses on assessing and optimising the availability of biomass resources. Earth Observation techniques are being employed to identify and estimate the potential of biomass production for specific areas. The data derived from this tool, along with in-situ measurements based on common agricultural and forestry survey practices offer great potential for determining biomass production. Within the project, a harmonized methodology will be proposed for assessing the land use/coverage and forest types, above-ground biomass, carbon content.

GEOCOM, Geothermal Communities, is an ongoing project that emphasizes and will demonstrate the best available technologies in the use of geothermal energy in combination with innovative energy-efficient measures. In addition, other renewable energy sources will be integrated into the three different pilot sites based in Hungary, Italy, and Slovakia. Research will also be conducted along with the demonstration component to highlight possibilities to make geothermal projects more cost-efficient and technologically sound. Further, cities currently utilizing geothermal systems in Macedonia, Poland, Romania and Serbia will be involved to further advance or develop their systems.

DIBANET, Development of Integrated Biomass Approaches Network, is a project seeking to decrease the EU’s dependency on importing diesel fuels and waste by constructing novel technologies to produce sustainable diesel miscible biofuels (DMBs). As a means to paving the way for large-scale, sustainable biofuel production by 2020 with minimal land use impacts and while addressing the increasing organic waste levels, DIBANET builds off the knowledge a global network of experts and researchers from the EU and South America.

ImpactMin will develop new methods and a corresponding toolset for the environmental impact monitoring of mining operations using Earth Observations. Cutting-edge technology will be proposed for the combined use of satellite remote sensing, aerial lightweight measurements and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The proposed methods will be validated at four demonstration sites corresponding to different scales and scope. The theoretical advancement in science and technology will be made public knowledge with the help of a free multimedia interactive e-learning programme while the tools and foreground knowledge generated by the project will be commercialised by the involved Small and Medium sized companies (SMEs).

ECOWILL aims to increase the number of eco-driving training programmes in Europe by encouraging the integration of eco-driving into the B category driving education/exam systems and by implementing short duration training sessions, and with e-learning solutions for drivers of passenger car and van/light commercial vehicles (LCV). Throughout the project, short duration eco-driving training programs for licensed drivers will be conducted in 13 European countries (Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Spain, The Netherlands and United Kingdom).

The massive production of tyres and the difficulties in disposing of them after use has been one of the most serious environmental problems worldwide in recent years. The EKOPAN project is seeking to address the existing problems by re-using tyres in the manufacture of an ordinary construction element like roadway noise barriers. This project is in line with the principles laid down in the current European Parliament Directive (Directive 2006/12/EC) on waste, in which the upcycling and use of waste as raw materials are encouraged in order to preserve natural resources.  Specifically, the EKOPAN project is setting out to fill the gap between the development of the acoustic panel and the mass production and marketing phase. Thus, it is focussing on optimizing the manufacturing process on an industrial scale, validating the mechanical and acoustic properties, and conducting a market study that will facilitate the penetration of the new product.
